Goals proved to be the difference in this hard fought game held in the Mary Immaculate grounds yesterday, and exciting football was seen throughout even with the pitch being in less than immaculate condition due to recent weather. Clodagh Reidy shone from start to finish with her clinical finishing, giving her a very impressive 3-1 total by the end. The first half saw early scores from MIC’s Aine Kelly and Clodagh Reidy which opened them a strong lead. Martina Gallagher, Grainne Ni Luasca, and Aine Bratnach were performing well around the middle of the park, supporting both the attackers and defenders. But the GardaCollege were a very solid and bright team and it wasn’t long before they started getting on the scoreboard themselves. They began with a lucky free that dropped just below the crossbar and into the back of the net, and this spurred them on for more scores. And near the half time whistle, the away side were awarded a penalty which they confidently converted. This left MIC trailing at the interval by 3 points. The second half saw early scores for GardaCollege, which began to widen their lead but MIC showed their fighting spirit and determination right the way through. Clodagh Reidy took any chance she got, some fantastic goals which brought her team back level. The game was on a knife edge. Goals from the GardaCollege and MIC’s energetic Grainne Ni Luasca kept the game this way. The defence were doing their jobs heroically and on a quick counterattack Clodagh Reidy struck near the end to give MIC ladies victory. They had to withstand heavy pressure near the end but managed to come out in top. The final score was 6-2 to 3-8, a hard earned win.
