MaryImmaculateCollege was delighted to receive the news that Dr Catherine Dalton has secured funding from the Environmental Protection Agency for PhD research to be carried out in the Geography Department. The research on Limno- and Palaeo-Ecological Responses to Lake Water Dissolved Organic Carbon, will investigate the recent increase in the colour and humic content of surface waters. This is a trend which has potentially critical effects on aquatic ecosystems and on drinking water production.
The project will receive €95,000 over 3 years and will be used to support Karin Sparber, a registered PhD candidate in the department. Dr Catherine Dalton has successfully secured EPA funding for four PhD students in recent years and is a credit to the college. The support of the €95,000 along with ISSP funding, means that three more PhD students will be fully funded from external sources in the next academic year. Well done to Catherine on her continued success in this area and we wish her all the best with future projects.
